The National PDP Professionals an Business Group (NPPBG) has thrown its support behind the decision of the national electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to continue with the Edo State governorship elections as planned.
In a statement on Thursday, NPPBG National Coordinator, Dr. Arome Salifu said the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold the election on Saturday, September 10 has provided a lifeline for the survival of democracy.
Salifu condemned the call by the Police and the DSS for the postponement of the election describing it as an attempt to derail the democracy that the PDP laboured to sustain for 16 years. He described the ‘the threat of Boko Haram attack’ as a flimsy excuse by the security agents to give the APC enough time to perfect their rigging plan.
“The APC has foreseen their defeat in Edo and therefore seeking the postponement of their doomsday,” he said.
The statement read in part: “We woke up this morning with the rude shock of security advice to postpone the scheduled Edo State Governorship Election by DSS and the Police barely 24 hours to the election.
“Edo state is well known as one of the most peaceful states in the country. It maintained this status even since the campaigns. No evidence on the ground to justify any threat whatsoever to the election.
“The National PDP Professionals and Business Group condemns this move in totality. The move is antithetical to democratic principles, values and practices. It further goes to show that President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC are suffering from bankruptcy of integrity and political and democratic immorality.
It said the action has proven that the DSS and the Police are mere security arms of the APC ready to execute any anti-democratic orders given by APC propagandists just the same way they successfully scuttled the scheduled PDP National Convention in Port Harcourt.
“We therefore encourage INEC not to allow itself to be used by APC to carry out their self-serving agenda of winning the Edo State Governorship Election at all or any cost. Edo People are tired of APC’s incompetence, hence, their decision and resolution to have a change; this, has been clearly revealed to the APC, hence, the plan to perfect their rigging strategies.
“We therefore call on well-meaning Nigerians, Civil Society Organisations, members of the International Communities to speak up against this looming political disaster in our dear country. We also call on Edo people to hold on to their position to reject and resist APC regardless of their rigging plans.”
