The chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC), Barrister Godwin Dudu-Orumen, has commended the group, the New Owan Progressives Worldwide Association( NOPWA) for their commitment to grassroots football development.
NOPWA are the organizers of the Own Unity Cup for U17 footballers. The tournament, which has just commenced is in its second edition.
In a message to the organizers, Dudu-Orumen said:
“I wish to congratulate the New Owan Progressives Worldwide Association (NOPWA) on the commencement of the 2nd Edition of their U-17 Owan Unity Cup.
The Edo State Sports Commission wishes to wholeheartedly endorse this competition and applaud the efforts of NOPWA in this effort. Hopefully, in the near future, you will expand the Sports competitions to beyond Football.
“This competition fits in with the Commission’s plan to commence an Edo State Youth Sports League in two- team Sports amongst all the 18 Local Governments in Edo State. The league will engage 50 Sportsmen and women and create direct and in-direct employment for over 500 people altogether. Opportunities of course will be created for many more potential athletes who will be striving to be selected in the various teams”.
The ESSC boss called on other individuals and groups in all the local governments in the state to follow the example of NOPWA and initiate similar competitions in order to enable them have teams to participate in the Edo State Youth Sports League.
“As we work to restore the Glory of Edo State in the Sports sector of the economy, we hope to get the support of all and sundry.
