Two buildings were on Thursday razed in separate fire incidents that completely destroyed a storey building and a popular shopping mall in Warri, Delta State.
The shopping complex situated at No. 2 Erhihovwere Street, Okumagba Avenue and the chains of stores in the building were destroyed in the fire.
An eyewitness, Joy Anyahi, told the Nigerian Times, “I was sleeping in my home, when my phone rang and someone told me the compound where I have my store was on fire.
“Before we could rush to the scene, the fire had already razed down ten stores including properties worth over millions of naira. It took the help of good Samaritans to quench the fire after a long time.”
In a separate incident, a storey building located along DSC Express Way, opposite Tipper Garage was on Thursday morning gutted by fire, destroying about ten flats in the building.
Ufuoma Kedienhon, a resident of the building said that the inferno started from one of the flats at about 10:30am before extending to other flats in the building.
Kedienhon, a father of twin girls, lamented that before help could come from the fire service in the area, all their personal belongings had been burnt.
“I was just about driving out from my compound when I sighted flames of smokes from my neighbour’s flat. I quickly raised the alarm and before we could gain access to the flat, the fire had already entered my flat.
“Thank God my children and wife were not at home when it started. I tried hard to pick my documents and certificates but I could not. Not even clothes for my twins were picked from my apartment.
“It is very unfortunate. Before the Fire Service arrived, the entire building had already been gutted and nobody was able to save any property because of the harmattan. We have lost property worth millions,” he said.
