Governors, military and police top brass, politicians flood Daura for DG DSS’s daughter’s wedding

Director Genersl of SSS, Lawan Daura

In the last one week, Nigeria’s political elite have closed ranks, setting aside party differences to celebrate with two leading members of the fraternity.

Last Friday, Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria’s former military Head of State, gave out his daughter, Halima in marriage. On that day, the city of Minna, Niger State, venue of the wedding was shut down as political and military heavyweights including former presidents, former governors and senators, serving governors and senators and key government officials converged to honour the former Nigerian helmsman.

And then, today, at the Low Cost Housing Estate Jumaat mosque, Daura, Katsina State, the setting was similar as Lawal Daura, the dreaded head of Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS), gave his daughter, Mardiyya, out in marriage to her heartthrob, Zaharadeen. The roll call of dignitaries was expansive with politicians across board jostling to pay homage to Daura, feared by many for his use of strong arm tactics on individuals seen by him to be on the wrong side of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The convergence of politicians, both members of ruling APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was clear indication to ordinary Nigerians often used as cannon fodder by politicians in the “war games”, that in the final analysis, only interests not enmity, is permanent in the calculations of the political elite.

With Daura wielding enormous influence in the Buhari administration on account of his filial ties with the president, being in Daura this Friday was less the politicians’ way of expressing camaraderie toward Daura but more a way of showing themselves “loyal” to the boss, Buhari, who is battling serious health challenge in far away London.

Leading the pack of political superstars to the wedding, was Alhaji Abba Kyari, President Buhari’s Chief of Staff and a ranking member of the cabal, the triumvirate of power thirsty members of the president’s inner circle, which includes, the DSS boss, Daura and Mamman Daura, President Buhari’s nephew.

Also at the wedding was a stellar cast of political and military heavyweights including Minister of Interior, Alhaji Abdulrahman Damazau, Army Chief, General Tukur Buratai, Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, Kaode Fayemi, Minister of Solid Minerals, heads of paramilitary agencies like the Federal Road Safety Corps, , Nigeria Immigration Services and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Not left out of the show of “solidarity” were former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maigari Dikko and Hon. Kawu Sumaila.

State Governors, many of whom their states are owing salaries of workers running into several months also took time off work to celebrate with the DSS strongman. The governors who attended the occasion include those of Kano, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Ogun, Bauchi, Zamfara and Katsina, where the event held. Other governors were represented by their deputies.
