NANS lauds FG over upgrade of 4 COEs to universities

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended the Federal Government for upgrading the Alvan Ikoku College of Education and three other colleges of education to universities.
A statement issued by NANS and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja said the federal government had proved that it attached premium to education.
The statement signed by the NANS’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Nwankwo Ezekiel, said it was a gesture worthy of commendation.
According to the statement, it indicates that the federal government under President Goodluck Jonathan is not paying lip service to the sector.
“The upgrade will go a long way in restoring the dignity of the teaching profession and giving the students and lecturers of the institutions a sense of belonging.
“The case of Alvan Ikoku College of Education is particularly elating as it is a foremost College of Education that has produced lots of distinguished teachers, administrators, businessmen and political leaders,’’ it said.
The statement urged the incoming administration to redeem its campaign promises especially that of giving free education to Nigerian students at all levels.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) had on May 22 approved the upgrade of four Federal Colleges of Education to the status of universities of education.
They are the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo; Federal College of Education, Zaria; Federal College of Education, Kano; and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri. (NAN)
