Suspected Okada thief set ablaze by angry mob in Nasarawa

An unidentified man alleged to have stolen a motorcycle(Okada), was set ablaze by angry youths at about noon in the Masaka area of Nasarawa state on Sunday.

The incident occurred after the Masaka U-Turn in the neighbouring Nasarawa state by the roadside near Pantaker market at about 12:20pm.

An eyewitness, who witnessed how the incident unfolded earlier, told our correspondent, who later arrived at the scene that the victim and his accomplice, now at large, had stolen the Okada belonging to a commercial motorcyclist in the area.

They were said to have succeeded in hiding the motorbike at a distance close to the scene and boarded a bus probably on another mission when they were intercepted by the Okada union in the area.

On tip off by the brother of the owner of the bike, who identified the alleged thieves, the union members were said to have dragged them down from the bus near the scene of the incident but one of them escaped leaving the other in the hands of the mob.

Our correspondent, who witnessed the incident from this point, observed the angry youths, mostly commercial motorists plying the route and hoodlums hitting the man with big sticks and stones after driving a 9-inch nail into his skull as onlookers crowded the scene.

They were bent on killing the man, who appeared to be in his thirties, despite pleas from a few sympathizers, who suggested he should be handed to the police instead.

After pouncing on him, beating him blue and black with blood gushing out of his head and other parts of his body, the mob gathered used tyres on the suspected Okada thief, poured fuel on it and set the tyres ablaze.

The man managed to attempt to escape with the fire but some of the youths went after him, hitting him and further smashing his head with big stones until, ripping his skull open.

Men of the Nigerian Police Force were soon drafted to the scene of the incident, who shot repeatedly into the air before the angry mob dispersed.

The partially burnt and bartered body of the victim was evacuated by the police into their vehicle to an unknown destination.

The spokesperson for the Nasarawa Police command could not be reached for comments as at press time.
